the Papers of Thomas Claiborne

From William McBean, 20 October 1850

Walla Walla 20th. Octr. 1850

Captn. Clayburn

My Dear Sir

I beg to acknowledge your kind Note pr. Pierre and permit me to add that I was not only surprised but disappointed at Y[illegible]ee’s decision. I am more convinced than ever, that gratitude must not be expected in a savage’s breast. I am now of opinion, though I have not been informed by them, that they do not intend to give more.

Y[illegible]ee & Pierre intend shortly to pay you a visit—I shall not fail to put Pierre in mind of the horse which he promised you at U[ma]ttilla.

With sentiments of the greatest possible Respect & Esteem, permit me dear sir, to Subscribe myself

Your Most Obt. Servant
